1976 Porsche 934 Turbo RSR

Le Mans 24hrs / Nürburgring 1000kms / Daytona 24hrs / Sebring 12hr

Price: GBP £POA

Introduced in 1976, the Porsche 934 was the official Group 4 racing version of the 930 Turbo. Having homologated the model by producing the required 400 road-going 930 Turbos over two consecutive years, Porsche constructed just 31 examples of the pure-bred racer.

Built around a standard galvanized 930 bodyshell, the 934 was transformed with a full aluminium roll cage, a stripped interior containing only a single racing seat with harness, and additional instrumentation for monitoring boost pressure. Power was adjustable between 480 and 560 bhp via a dashboard dial, giving the 1,120 kg car an extraordinary power-to-weight ratio of roughly 2 kg per horsepower.

The 934 retained the production 930’s four-speed gearbox and iconic whale-tail spoiler, as required by the regulations. This prevented the fitment of the large air-to-air intercooler used on the works 2.1-litre Turbo RSRs. Porsche’s solution was characteristically clever: water radiators mounted in the front spoiler circulated coolant to twin heat exchangers in the engine bay, dropping intake charge temperatures from 300 °F (149 °C) down to 120 °F (49 °C).

The front compartment housed a 144-litre fuel cell, oil tank, and battery, all reinforced by a substantial aluminium cross-brace. Upgraded running gear included 917-derived finned brake calipers with ventilated and cross-drilled discs, strengthened hubs, and centre-lock wheels measuring 10.5 inches wide at the front and a massive 16 inches at the rear.

When the prototype 934, driven by Manfred Schurti, lapped the Nürburgring 15 seconds faster than the best 3.0-litre Carrera RSRs, the message was clear. By early 1976, most top European GT teams abandoned their RSRs and switched to the new 934.

Chassis 0158 was delivered new by Porsche’s Competition Department to Erwin and Manfred Kremer in Cologne. Financed by German privateer Gerhard Holup, the car was primarily campaigned by Holup in national events, while the Kremer brothers retained rights to enter it in major World and European Championship races with professional drivers.

In 1976, #0158 made its mark on the international stage. Bob Wollek, Didier Pironi, and Marie-Claude Beaumont shared driving duties at the Le Mans 24 Hours, while Reinhold Joest, Jürgen Barth, and Bob Wollek contested the 6 Hours of Dijon.

For the 1977 season, the car was sold to Dieter Schornstein, who ran a full season in the German DRM Championship under Sekurit sponsorship. Schornstein contested all ten rounds and raced the 934 a total of 20 times that year. On occasion the car competed in Group 5 specification, fitted with a larger 935-style rear wing.

In 1978, Schornstein upgraded to a new 935 and sold #0158 back to Gerhard Holup. Holup teamed up with Edgar Dören and ran the car under Weralit tool manufacturer sponsorship, prepared by the Max Moritz team. For the 1978 Le Mans 24 Hours, the car was entered by Kremer in striking orange Jägermeister livery, driven by Holup, Dören, Hervé Poulain, and Romain Feitler. It retired after 16 hours with transmission failure, but across its seven international outings that season, #0158 secured one class win and two second-place finishes in GT.

The car retained its orange livery for the remainder of 1978. In 1979 it was repainted in its familiar white with green and red stripes and continued under Weralit sponsorship. Competing in the DRM (now open to Group 4 cars running alongside faster Group 5 machinery), Edgar Dören drove #0158 to four victories — enough to clinch the overall German championship.

After four intense seasons and 66 races — including two starts at Le Mans and two at the Nürburgring 1,000 km — chassis 0158’s European career came to an end. It was sold to American enthusiast Jack Refenning in Florida. In 1980–81, Refenning campaigned the car in IMSA GTO, contesting the Daytona 24 Hours and Sebring 12 Hours. In its final race, the 1981 Daytona 24 Hours, #0158 finished a respectable 9th overall.
